Public Lecture: Grassroots Insurgent Feminist Urbanism in Seoul w/ Dr. Eunseon Park

5. June 18:00 – 20:00 Uhr

South Korea has undergone rapid urbanization paired with geographical inequalities. Seemingly unstoppable and ubiquitous, large-scale construction projects have constantly changed the geosocial texture of the country, while marginalizing the evicted, the poor, and social minorities–with the approval of the state and through the corporate capital. As one of the most prominent and consistent dissenters of the developmental drive, Listen to the City (https://www.listentothecity.org/) has intervened in this process since 2009, embarking on grassroots movements and art activism. This talk will demonstrate how the Seoul-based urbanist collective has fought against authoritarian, market-driven planning through feminist grassroots urban/ eco-activism and how this contributed to changes in perspectives on urban issues as well as urban planning laws in South Korea. Drawing upon her experiences as an activist, artist, and scholar, Eunseon Park will explain why she coined the term “Grassroots Insurgent Feminist Urbanism” and invite you to discuss what implication this concept could have for your field of work.
