Following the first part of our project, the artist Paula Kaniewska and I would like to invite you to our workshop, titled „Polenmarkt – how to think about borders through art“ on November 27, 2023, at CRC, BH-N 230, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Polenmarkt is back” is a project at the intersection of sociology, arts-based research, and science communication.

The aim of the workshop is to reflect on the relationship between sociological methodology and artwork through the concept of multiple spatialities. The concept of multiple spatiality enables us to understand differences and similarities between spatial aspects of actors, actions and establishment of the Polish market and its embeddedness in the German-Polish Border region.

After an intensive research stay at the Polenmarkt in Hohenwutzen/Osinów Dolny for our “Hand on Heart” project we would like to invite you, to discuss with us the further process.

Through interviews, we collected stories from those who work at the market, those who visit it regularly, and occasional visitors. Simultaneously, we conducted photo documentation of the objects sold at the Polenmarkt. By combining these data sets, we aim to analyze and narrate the history of the place, as well as its role in cross-border life. Based on the results of the first part, we plan to create a multimedia installation using materials collected at the market. Our intention is to explore the intersection of analog and digital in reference to objects and their materiality. We would like to make objects “speak” about various relationships and dynamics that constitute the Polenmarkt.

As for the materials, we will primarily be engaging with three selected interviews and images that we took at the Polenmarkt. We will also look at the spatial relationships in which Polenmarkt is entangled – mapping the towns and cities that are connected to the market through the buyers and sellers.

In this session, our focus will be on discussing two main aspects with you. First, we want to share our material, and second, we want to delve into our art-based research process.

We are particularly interested in addressing the following questions:

How can a transdisciplinary approach help us understand processes of multiple spatialities in the border region of Germany and Poland?
How can we interpret the data through an art-based research logic? What different ways of interpreting the data does the art-based research offer?
What kind of knowledge space can we create through a future exhibition?
